Volvo Penta 2002 MS2B Spline Shaft Repair

Common problems that can lie dormant inside the Volvo Penta MS2B are the splines that connect the crankshaft of the Volvo Penta 2000 Series motors, to the input shaft of the MS2B Series transmission. These splines are not cushioned at all and a direct connection to the input shaft. Upon removing the transmission during my refit and inspecting the splines my transmission was showing signs of the problem.

The spline was beginning to round over and eventually would have stripped out completely leaving me with no drive. There are numerous solutions to this issue which range from replacing the engine, shipping your input shaft to Europe to have versatile marine (who told me in March 2017 that they no longer are repairing this issue) or DB marine who will mill the shaft into a hex and make a new crank shaft plate with cushion headed bolts. DBS price as of March 27 2017 was £ 480.00 GBP. Not including the shipping and insurance and would have been roughly a 6 week turnaround for me. So taking some ques from others who have had this conversion done I had a local machinist mill my input shaft into a 9/16inch hex that I then welded an impact socket into the original adapter plate.

This solution worked quite well and has lasted the season with no signs of wear, even with this fix I am still committing time each year to remove the transmission and inspect the input shaft.
